Transitional Advising (Internal Transfers)

Students not currently enrolled in the College of Engineering should follow the below steps to learn more about the internal transfer process.

Step 2: Register for and attend an Engineering Change of Major Information Session. *Pre-registration is required, see below to register*

Step 3: Submit a change of major or minor application during one of the change of major application periods.
To declare a primary engineering major: Change of Major Application in Hokie Spa
To add a secondary restricted engineering major: Secondary Application for Restricted Engineering Majors
To add a secondary non-restricted engineering major: Secondary Application for Non-Restricted Engineering Majors
To add an engineering minor: COE Minor Application

Step 4: For additional questions after attending an information session, review the College of Engineering Major Information Session details, or schedule an appointment with University Transitional Advising.

COE Internal Transfer Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When can I apply to an engineering major?
    Students can apply to an engineering major when they complete all of the engineering change of major course requirements, have a minimum 2.0 overall VT GPA, and have earned at least 12 GPA hours at Virginia Tech. Applications are accepted at the end of spring, end of summer, and end of fall.

ENGE 1216 is typically taught in fall, spring, and summer I. Any student is permitted to take this course during any term (Pre-Requisite: ENGE 1215).

ENGE 1414 is typically taught in the fall semester only. Only College of Engineering students are permitted to take this course (Pre-Requisite: ENGL 1105; MATH 1225; MATH 1226; 19 earned transfer hours).
